Paused: the daily API limit was reached
The accounting API has a per-organisation daily call budget. The job stops short of it and continues by itself.
The message you saw
Paused: held back until tomorrow — today's Xero call budget is nearly used up.
Why this happens
Xero limits how many API calls any app may make to one organisation per day, and that budget is shared with every other connected app in that organisation.
Each document costs roughly a dozen calls — read, copy, attachments, rename, void, read back, history notes — so a large batch can reach the ceiling.
Rather than run into the limit and fail a document halfway, the job pauses itself while it still has headroom. That is deliberate: a paused job is safe, a failed one mid-write is not.
What to do
- Do nothing. The budget resets daily and the job resumes automatically from the next document in the list.
- If you need the rest finished sooner, check whether another connected app is using the same budget and pause it for the day.
- For a big clean-up, split it across days on purpose: smaller jobs finish and report, rather than sitting paused.
- If the job is still paused two days later, email us the Job ID.
What happened to your document
Every document already finished is finished and will not be repeated. The document that was in progress was completed or rolled back before the pause — the job never pauses mid-document.
